Thanks to all of the SuperMarlins who dressed up, and congratulations to our contest winners, the “Incredible” trio of Jonathan and Jullia Crocker, and Evan Koehn. And boy, did that carry over. Anyone who was at the meet Saturday knows what a special meet it was. Yes, we had a little extra motivation than usual, but we outspirited a Flower Valley team known for their spirit (not to mention we outswam them). We should be very proud of finishing with a winning record in A Division. It would take a miracle for Bethesda, Flower Valley, or Hallowell to pass us in the standings at Divisionals. So, the prospect of a trophy looks good. Let’s finish the B meet season undefeated this Wednesday to add another accomplishment to this great season. I want to see everybody dressed up again! Since this is the last Coach’s Corner of the season, I’d like to take this time to recognize our coaching staff. All of these coaches have worked with me since they were very young, and I am proud of the progress they have made as coaches and role models. I can’t say enough about Allison Lapp, who has worked harder than any other Assistant that I’ve had, and I can’t think of anyone better to take over when I finally do retire. The Junior Assistants, Christine Mulquin, Mike Larson, Allison Kimball, Andrew Clark, and Matt Larson, have done a great job as well. These coaches are a big part of the reason why we are so successful at all levels A, B, and Pre. I can’t think of another team that has so many fast and improving swimmers. Please thank these coaches as the year ends! This year was a great year. Every parent and child on the team plays a part in making the season a success, so here’s to all of you. I hope everyone had fun, learned a lot, and made good memories. Believe me, these are the things you’ll remember when you look back on your swimming, not your times or even which size trophy you got. Even though you’re probably feeling tired (I know I am), I hope that some part of you can’t wait to start again next summer. I also want to thank everyone for everything they’ve done for me over the last 10 years, and more recently, for how welcome you make Kelly and Amanda feel. And as far as next year goes…don’t believe the rumors – if there’s news, you’ll hear it right from the source. Only one week until the Gala! Hope to see everyone there! Weekly News (Posted 7/3/07)Entire Newsletter available online. Sorry for the lecture you’re about to receive, but this is my only fullteam forum, and I feel compelled to address some of the things I’m seeing. As we move through the summer, the grind is starting to wear on some of us, especially if we have other activities going on. I wanted to remind everybody that we are in this to have fun, first and foremost. Swimmers tend to plateau a little in the middle of the season. I realize that we have a competitive team in a competitive league. But I can’t stand it when I see a kid or a parent get the slightest bit upset because their time was 0.5 seconds slower than it was a week ago. Come on. Everybody needs to remember the fact that kids are not going to do their best times every week. This doesn’t mean that they’re doing anything wrong. There is only so much you can improve over a week, and that is assuming that the kids come to every practice and remember everything they learned in practice, which are bold assumptions to say the least. Remember that they are just kids, and they need to be supported unconditionally at the proper time and place. On that note, be very cautious with pushing private lessons on your children. I know we’re always looking for that next level of trophy or that elusive A meet spot, and the private lesson may be tempting in order to try for those goals. But many times, the kids will believe that they are required to improve the meet after the lesson, and if they don’t, they have failed. They may also believe that they have failed in practice if they are encouraged to have lessons. Placing that much importance on results, as opposed to the process, is not good for the kids. Swimming is a longterm process, and most young kids cannot process complex instructions and apply them to their swims instantly. The bottom line is: they’re going to do what they have done repetitively in practice, not what they have done a few times in a lesson. Give them time to practice, repeat, learn, and have fun without the pressure of “needing” that best time. On a related note, I want to discourage parents from accompanying their kids to the starting area. I know that you want to give that last bit of encouragement, advice, or stroke correction, but trust me, doing it at that time really makes the kids nervous, and doesn’t help them go faster. Please, let the coaches be the ones to give the kids lastminute encouragement at the clerkofcourse or behind the blocks, because that’s what we’re there for. And that goes for after the events as well. There are many parents recently who have been hovering over the timers to get their kids’ times the second the race is over. Believe me, this sends a message to the kids that their time itself is the most important part of the meet experience, not the fact that they competed and had fun. It puts enormous pressure on your children when they believe that you put that much emphasis on their results, and trust me, they notice. Let your child come to you and ask them how they did, that way they will know you care about them, more so than their time. If the time is important to your child, he/she will tell you what it was. (Plus, you can look at the results later). The coaching staff wants your kids to succeed, but we want them to enjoy what they’re doing while they’re succeeding. When the kids swim without any pressure, good things will happen! Let them learn, work hard, and achieve whatever they happen to achieve, and be there to congratulate them no matter what they do. Let’s have fun and swim fast! Only three weeks until the Gala! Coach DaveWeekly News (Posted 6/25)Monday PM practice - Due to the picnic, we will not have regular Monday PM practice.
